Clearwater Ales.
We are proud to produce a small but consistently excellent range of fine Ales found in discerning pubs on and around Exmoor and also now in bottles to be enjoyed anywhere.

Real Smiler, Devon Dympsy, Proper Ansome and Devon Darter all have their own character and carry a taste of Exmoors rugged beauty and individuality with them.

Real Smiler
A lighter hoppier beer. Although essentially a summer beer, it will appeal throughout the year due to its refreshing nature.

At 3.7% it is the lightest in our range.

A lovely nose of crisp, fresh cut apples and melon accompanies a honeyed tone in the glass. It has a lightness but nothing is lacking. A faint velvety bubble and a light biscuit taste, along with the most delicate of tannins. No dry mouth or bitterness here. It is in essence a faithful, traditional style ale but also a light, hoppy thirst quencher. A real ale so focused on warm weather that it could conceivably challenge the range of lagers most commonly drunk. Try it cold.

Devon Dympsy
Formerly "Cavalier" this is a smokey, smooth chestnut ale. With a lemony aroma the beer has a citrusy edge and already has a loyal following.

At 4% this is a popular session beer.

Devon Dympsy has a sumptuous lemony aroma, rounded out with toasted sugars. Poured into the glass the beer reveals an oak honey tone, and it's nose develops to encompass tart apple freshness and some light malt wisps. The first taste delivers a primarily citrusy edge, but extends to touch upon delicate hop tannins, finishing with a faintly smokey air. 

Dympsy is extremely drinkable, and - after a deceptively light start - unfurls layers of evocative flavour and scent, forming an ale of bright citrus eddies and heady pastoral undercurrents.

 

Proper Ansome
Our bitterest beer for the more discerning drinker. Malty flavoured and dark in colour, we believe it will be a favourite for years to come.

ABV 4.2%.

Devon Darter
Formerly "High Tide" this is a fruity, copper ale. With an aroma reminiscent of grapes the taste is a nutty, light bitterness.

At 4.5% ABV it is our strongest beer.

Devon Darter asserts it's unique character right from its first scent, sending forth first rich chocolates, then towards a surprisingly ripe, almost tropical fruit bloom. It's smooth pour amasses a calm but formidable head to the ale, the bubbles of which disperse and regroup to release bursts of peach, faint toffee, and coastal grasses.

The first taste is a short hop note with a hint of sea side salt in the air. Further tastes retain a clear, soft centre to the structure whilst the combinations of citrus fruits and grapes jostle for pole position occasionally accented by a light nutty bitterness.

The graduating character of Devon Darter is accentuated by it's in-mouth nature of finishing short on the palate, then delivering an even more varied taste selection with each following sip.
